The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Appellate Lawyers Representatives’ Guide to Practice provides an outline of the appellate process and detailed information about many court procedures. According to the Court’s website, “

[w]hile not an official court publication, the guide was developed by the Ninth Circuit’s Appellate Lawyer Representatives, a group of highly experienced and respected practitioners appointed by Ninth Circuit Chief Judge Alex Kozinski to advise the court on procedural and other matters.” A revised version, dated August 26, 2014, now addresses writs, en banc petitions and procedures, and amicus briefs, and has been revised to reflect changes in rules and practice.

Viewing 9th Circuit Court of Appeals Oral Arguments on the Internet

You can access audio or video streams from the main page of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals website. Click on one of the links under the beige-colored bar labeled “Live Oral Arguments.” The links are labeled by date, starting time and location. All of the cases scheduled for that day will be streamed. Streaming will usually commence a few minutes prior to the scheduled start of the proceedings. You can also listen or view past audio and video recordings at the media page and at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals YouTube channel.

Clicking on one of the links in the table opens a new web page displaying case names and numbers, along with a brief description of the nature of the case, where the case originated and the time allotted for argument. Clicking on the case numbers provides access to the PACER system, allowing registered PACER users to access the case docket and various documents.
