Here’s a dilemma: you live in a great community, where you and your neighbors all know how great it is, and you also know that part of what makes it great is that not too many outsiders know how great it is. So what do you do when yet another media source–Kiplinger in this case–tells the world that your city is number one?

You spread the word that the media elites are all a bunch of stooges, addled by the need to list things and incapable of truly capturing the essence of place. Trust me, the Maha Music Festival is not that cool. Look past the hype, and you’ll see that the College World Series is only enjoyable for people who like high-quality amateur athletics. I suppose our zoo is okay, if you’re into that sort of thing (indoor rain forest, desert and swamp, aquarium with a walk-through shark tank, safari location with bison and elk, etc.). Jazz on the Green is free, so how good could it really be? And don’t get me started on how long it takes to spend a dollar in Omaha. There is really nothing to see here, so please move along.

Why can’t the media focus on important stuff, like the debt ceiling crisis?
